Fragmentation, Repetition, Replication and Linearity (FRRL): New works by Giovanni Giacoia & Alison McBride.
FRRL is a playful reflection on painting and its recurring fears: the crisis of the subject, its constant deaths, the impossibility of painting the 'new' and the solitary act of painting.
As an excuse to start the painting process, Giacoia gave McBride bits of paper and broken ceramics from his studio to be used as the subject of her investigations. McBride in exchange gifted giacoia with her used plastic palettes to be recycled as the subject of his own explorations. Shifting the idea of the subject from choice to gift and using residual materials as the protagonists of their paintings, Giacoia-McBride reduce painting to its most rudimentary state of shapes and matter. In doing so they allow painting to become a playful circular act based on trust, exchange and collaboration, liberating the painter from their solitary activity and choices.
The result is an enquiry into the genesis of a painting and its many missteps; into dichotomy of figuration/abstraction; and into the value of the fragment as the prompter of the creative process. In the end painting is an act of faith in the ability of subject and material to disclose a dialogue.
